Academic Retreat: Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov

Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov

We are delighted to bring Dr. Hilary Finley to the Valor Institute’s Kingfisher Center in La Jolla, CA for a retreat on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov. As one publisher puts it: “Part mystery, part profound philosophical and theological debate, The Brothers Karamazov represents the culmination of Dostoevsky’s life’s work and ranks among the greatest novels of all time.” Dr. Finley wrote her dissertation on The Brothers Karamazov. She has taught the novel numerous times and has spoken widely on Dostoevsky, 20th century literature, and liberal arts education. We look forward to hosting Dr. Finley as she helps us discover the meaning and enduring significance of great literature, especially The Brothers Karamazov.

In addition to seminars and lectures, our guests will kayak in La Jolla Cove, hike at Torrey Pines State Reserve, and enjoy intentional meals and social time to build friendship and community. The retreat is open to anyone who wishes to join others and reason together as friends, including especially

  • Graduate students

  • University professors

  • Teachers, educators, and school leaders

  • Anyone with an appreciation for liberal education

The Valor Institute accepts between two to four guests per retreat. The application window is now closed.
