The Complexities of Patriotism
An Academic Retreat at the Kingfisher Center in La Jolla, CA, led by Susan Hanssen, Ph.D., Associate Professor of History at the University of Dallas.
What do I owe my country? Should I love my country? How much? In an increasingly complex and global society, questions surrounding patriotism can be difficult to navigate. Dr. Susan Hanssen, associate professor of history at the University of Dallas, has devoted much of her teaching and writing to the theme of patriotism: what kind of virtue it is and the significance it holds for human life. Drawing on essays from thinkers like George Orwell and G. K. Chesterton, Dr. Hanssen will lead us through a lively examination of what it means to be patriotic.
In addition to seminars and lectures, our guests will kayak in La Jolla Cove, hike at Torrey Pines State Reserve, and enjoy intentional meals and social time to build friendship and community. The retreat is open to anyone who wishes to join others and reason together as friends, including especially
